Sun-Earth Day To download presentations, click on the "Presentations" button in the menu bar to the left. Making Sun-Earth Connections:OverviewThe materials provided in each presentation are intended to assist scientists and educators when presenting to K-12 audiences. Each version of the presentation represents information collected from NASA scientists, seminars, web sites, and publications. The goal is to use the information that summarizes the Sun-Earth missions to reveal that the Sun is dynamic; its changes are dramatic. Ultimately, it is designed to spark an interest to learn more about the Sun-Earth connection.Connection to The National Education Science Standards:Teachers of all grade levels are free to incorporate the materials where appropriate in their curricula. One important concept to develop is one of change; the concept extends from the K-12 curricula. Throughout the presentation one sees the changing Sun and its resulting effects on the Earth. Grades K-2 -Things can change in different ways, such as color and movement. Grades 3-5 - Things change in steady, repetitive or in more than one way. Often the best way to tell which kind of change is happening is to make a table or graph of the measurements. Grades 6-8 - Cycles can be described by their cycle length or frequency. Grades 9-12 - In many physical, biological, and social systems, changes in one direction tend to produce opposing changes leading to repetitive cycles of behavior.About the Slides:Captions are provided for each of slides. Each caption gives a synopsis of the slide. The background notes provide in-depth background information. Background notes should be used to answer questions initiated by the presentation but not fully explained in the caption. The presentation could be shown all at once or in parts depending on ones objectives. The entire presentation should take between twenty and forty minutes. Most slides show multiple images and many are "real-time" satellite images. The K-2 presentation incorporates 5 movies within 12 slides. (For this version only, the captions are included as part of each slide.) The high school presentation incorporates 21 movies within 22 slides. Versions 6-8 and 9-12 include optional audio captions and therefore can be used as stand-alone presentations. Included in the guide is a list of web links accompanied by brief descriptions. A NASA publication, Looking at Earth from Space Glossary of Terms is also provided.
