Since 2001 we have celebrated Sun-Earth Day around the spring equinox. Each year the SECEF team chooses a new theme based on a particular solar event and develops programs and materials to support this theme.

Educating the public about NASA Sun-Earth Connection science is a natural fit to this approach as it allows us to engage our audience in interesting events they are already familiar with. Once the excitement for the theme has been generated it's an easy step to showing how NASA, and specifically Sun-Earth Connection Science, is an exciting and necessary field of research. What a great first step towards the future employment of curious and imaginative young minds.

To help expand the reach of this program, the SECEF team makes critical connections with science centers, schools, NASA Centers, and community-based organizations. We encourage these groups to host a variety of events around the Sun-Earth Connection Theme; and we provide materials specifically for education and public outreach for them to use during their events. Furthermore, our program usually has a large event on the actual Sun-Earth Day that everyone is encouraged to experience. This celebration is often made available to our users through a live NASA connect television show, or a live web cast that is linked-to from the Sun-Earth Day web site.
