Dr. Isabel Hawkins has been a Research Astronomer at UC Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory since 1988. She is also the Co-Director of NASA's Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum. She is a bilingual and bicultural native of Argentina, where she became interested in astronomy at an early age. When she was 10 years old, an unsuspecting encyclopedia salesman came to her home in Cordoba, Argentina, to sell a beautiful book on the solar system. One look at the marvelous images of Jupiter and the other planets, and she was hooked! Ever since then, she knew she wanted to be an astronomer. Volleyball was also an early passion of hers, which now has been replaced by golf. She learned to write about herself in the third person after arriving in the United States. She received a B.S. degree in Physics from UC Riverside and an M.S. and Ph.D. in astrophysics from UCLA. Isabel loves to share the excitement of astronomy with young people and with audiences from all walks of life. In particular she is interested in the relationship between science and culture, and enjoys working with diverse communities.
