Jim Thieman is the co-director of the Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) at Goddard Space Flight Center. He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Forum at GSFC and the coordination with the partner organization at the University of California Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory. The Forum promotes education and outreach for the Sun-Earth Connection science theme area of the NASA Office of Space Science. He enjoys being involved with the use of space science to inspire and motivate students to become involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It is also a privilege to be associated with such a talented SECEF staff.
Dr. Thieman is a scientist by training in the area of planetary radio astronomy. His Ph.D. studies included research on Jupiter radio emissions. as well as radio emissions from the Sun and other planets in our solar system. He has gotten students and interested individuals involved in this quest through the education project called Radio JOVE. (See http://radiojove.gsfc.nasa.gov). In this project participants can build a radio telescope or monitor remote radio telescopes through the internet.
Jim is also responsible for the management of the National Space Science Data Center's information systems. These systems have been in operation for more than twenty-five years and still offer a very useful set of services and information.
