Students can build a simple magnetometer to detect changes in the Earth's magnetosphere (this is only effective in higher latitudes). Students use the magnetometer to get a better understanding of the Earth's magnetic field. The students work in groups to construct and collect data using a classroom magnetometer. This is meant to provide students with a concrete example of technology used by NASA scientists. Students should collect data over several days so that variability in the Earth's magnetosphere can be detected.

NASA scientists use a variety of sources. This is for verification; students should recognize that they should not depend on a single source to draw a conclusion. Once students have created graphs using magnetometer data they should check their data with observatory data in the menu to the left called From Observatories.
