The Student Observation Network is designed to provide students with an opportunity to participate in predicting a solar event. Astronomers use radio waves to bring information about the universe to Earth-bound instruments.

Students can become radio astronomers by participating on one of the 3 possible levels.

  • Level 1: Basic: Students can use the easily accessible radio emission chart recordings to determine when an increase in radio wave emissions occurs.
  • Level 2: Internet-based Participation: Students can download software that allows them to listen to radio emissions and make comparisons among charts from telescopes around the world.
  • Level 3: Advanced (field work): Students can become radio astronomers by building their own radio telescope in order to collect and analyze radio emissions.
